It wasn't long after Ashley had fallen asleep on Justin’s back when an explosion could be heard from in the trees of the forest.
Ashley sat up hearing the sound and looked over only to see that the explosion was not far off. It wasn't long after she had awoken when one of the Unicorns who had been watching for the hunters came galloping over. He was bloody and he collapsed before the Shadow Unicorn.
"Run, you all must run! The hunters have found us, we no longer have the freedom we once had!" The unicorn said.
"How many are coming?" The Shadow Unicorn said.
"At least a hundred." The unicorn replied weakly.
Ashley jumped off of Justin's back and ran over to the injured Unicorn. She rested his head on her lap as she sat beside him and she examined his wounds.
"No time milady. You and the others must run to safety." The unicorn said.
"We can't just leave you here." Ashley said.
"It's too late for me…" The unicorn said with a smile. Then his eyes rolled up into his skull and he breathed his last.
It wasn't long after the unicorn had died when they could hear the shouts of the hunters as they came running in.
Ashley jumped to her feet while pulling out a small hand gun from her pocket. The other Unicorns all started to panic and run around franticly while in their human forms.
"STOP IT EVERYONE!" Ashley screamed. This was the side of Ashley not many get to see. Ashley's fighting spirit within her was wide awake and she was ready to help the Unicorns and protect them. Justin stood beside Ashley looking at her. He was in human form this time. He yelled then for everyone to stop as well.
The unicorns gathered around Ashley all shivering in fear.
"Stay calm, everyone." Ashley started. "We can't escape these hunters if we all run around like chickens with our heads cut off!" Ashley said sternly. A fire burned in her eyes as she spoke, the wind blew hard showing there was a storm on the way.
"But what shall we do? We surely cannot take on a hundred." Justin said to Ashley.
Ashley closed her eyes and looked to the ground slightly. "Everyone get in your Unicorn forms. We will run out of here. Those who can fight stay behind with me. We can hold the hunters back long enough for the mothers and foals to get to safety." Ashley said.
Some of the Unicorns listened to Ashley but a few others doubted her.
"Everyone listen to the girl!" The shadow unicorn said. "I know she doesn't seem to make sense but it makes sense to me."
Justin was already in his Unicorn form. "Everyone do it now!"
Everyone listened at Justin and the Shadow Unicorns words and the mother unicorns and their young galloped away quickly leaving most of the men and Ashley.
"Ok everyone form a line!" Ashley ordered as she ran over to a stop on a large boulder where she would be able to aim her gun and shoot things easily.
Just as the Unicorns were finishing getting lined up for battle, the hunters showed up. They came out of the woods like wolves and moved swiftly.
Ashley took aim and shot one of the hunters while the other Unicorns charged and started to attack the hunters by stabbing whatever they could with their horns.
Ashley kept on aiming and shooting but the more the Unicorns got in the fray the harder it got to shoot things without almost hitting a Unicorn.
It wasn't long before Ashley started yelling to retreat and run for their lives. Ashley jumped off her boulder while tossing her gun away since it was of no more use now. She dropped her backpack and carried with her only her lap top.
Ashley ran with the Unicorns towards the forest but she wasn't as fast as the Unicorns were and she started to fall behind. She kept on running as she tried to keep up with the Unicorns. She was the fastest runner when she had run the 5k run at Brown City Camp. But she could not keep up and soon she was alone in the forest.
After Running and following the trail of the Unicorns she grew tired and she had to stop. She leaned against a large oak tree and looked at the sky while she tried catching her breath. But not long after that she heard the noises of the hunters running up.
Ashley knew she had to find a hiding place. But where? There wasn't a place to hide now. She grabbed the special strapping she had made for her lap top so it could sit on her back like a back pack and she wore it like that. Just as she had finished doing that, the hunters came into view...AND SPOTTED HER!
They all recognized her and instantly took aim with one of their guns. Ashley started to run then. She heard a gun shot from behind as she ran. She now was just running and trying to find a hiding place.
Ashley kept on running. But as she ran she heard the sound of dogs. THE HUNTERS HAD DOGS! Ashley started running faster but her breathing was heavy and her chest started to hurt.
Then, at last she saw a stream. She ran through it so the dogs would loose her scent then she ran behind one of the large trees form across the stream and there she collapsed onto the ground where she sat breathing heavily and gasping for air.
She listened to the sound of the angry hunters on the other side of the stream as they stood there. And once they were gone, Ashley relaxed and hugged her knees up and under her chin.
Suddenly she felt very overly-tired and felt the need for sleep. She closed her eyes and leaned back against the tree and stretched her legs out and fell asleep. Too tired to move another inch.
Back with the other Unicorns, The Shadow Unicorn was checking on everyone but then noticed Ashley was missing. "Where is Ashley?" He wondered. Then he noticed Justin wasn't there either.
"Better go find Ashley. Maybe Justin ran ahead to find the king and tell him of the bad news." Shadow unicorn thought to himself as he left the Unicorns camp site for the night. He galloped off and retraced the hoof prints to where Ashley's last footprints were at.
Then he started to follow them slowly.
Ashley started to wake up but when she did she noticed a large shadow near by. Ashley thought it was the hunters and she pressed up against the tree close in fear.
The shadow kept moving closer towards her. Then it was right on top of her. Ashley clutched her legs and looked away hoping it would go away.
"Ashley?" A familiar voice said.
Ashley looked over only to see it was The Shadow Unicorn. "Shadow Unicorn!” She exclaimed. She went to stand but then started to fall.
Shadow Unicorn caught her and slid her onto his back. "Rest now, you have run hard. We will go back to camp and in the morning head for the king." He said softly.
Ashley nodded and without another word she passed out on Shadow Unicorn's back.
